Application Process

Apply to DSECT - with Stipend

The deadline for applications for the 2011-2012 has passed. To be considered for the 2012-2013 year, the deadline for application is January 9, 2012

To apply to this program a trainee must submit a full application package and may be invited to a face-to-face interview (in person or through video conference). For a brief overview of what we offer throughout the program year, you may wish to check out our “Quick DSECT Introduction” presentation

Most application materials should be completed and uploaded to the program website. To submit the online application materials, choose "Sign-Up" from the navigation bar above and create an account. Once your account is created, you will be able to create an application.

The following comprise the application materials that will be included in the online application:

  • Personal and education information
  • Current funding sources
  • Description of research interests
  • Description of the student’s training expectations and how this program will help facilitate career goals
  • Outline of proposed research study and how this could be extended to bridge at least two content/disciplinary areas
  • Secondary mentor choice
  • Two referees (one referee must be the student's current supervisor and indicate his/her support as the student's primary mentor). Specified referees will be sent an email with a link to complete an online reference letter.
  • Curriculum Vitae of both student and supervisor

Some application materials should be mailed to the program.

The following comprise the application materials that should be mailed to the program.

  • Transcripts from all institutions attended. Only official transcripts in a signed and sealed envelope will be accepted. If you attended an international school, it is acceptable to have your current institution provide certified copies of these international transcripts.
  • Graduate students must also send confirmation of acceptance into their program. If a student has already begun their graduate studies, the transcript can serve as confirmation of acceptance into their program provided that the program of study is clearly indicated on the transcript.
  • Those applying as post-doctoral fellows must provide evidence of completion (or near completion) of their PhD or health care doctorate degree.

Application Review Criteria

 The following criteria will inform assessment of the applications received:

  • Academic performance
  • Interest in research related to medication safety and effectiveness
  • Demonstrated experience and productivity in research (in relation to level of training)
  • Career goals (this training program is designed to produce independent investigators and scientific professionals who can contribute to the generation of new knowledge in medication safety and effectiveness)
  • Clearly delineated study that involves (or could involve) at least two scientific domains (biosciences; clinical; population health; health services and policy research)
  • Letters of support
  • Qualifications of supervisor  (based on the supervisor letter of support and CV)

 

Apply to DSECT – No Stipend

Individuals who are not eligible for, or not in pursuit of, stipend funding through the DSECT program but who still wish to participate in our curriculum and other educational events, may apply to the program. Applicants are required to have the support of their supervisor.  Applicants must be well conversant and able to comprehend scientific writing in English.

Individuals may wish to participate in one or all aspects of our programming. For a brief overview of what we offer throughout the program year, you may wish to check out our “Quick DSECT Introduction” presentation.

The process is as follows:

  1. Complete the “Application to participate in DSECT – No Stipend” form and submit  by email to admin@safeandeffectiverx.com
  2. Submit supporting documentation as mentioned in the application form to admin@safeandeffectiverx.com
  3. Wait to be contacted by DSECT program staff.

 Applications will be reviewed by the DSECT Application Review Committee. DSECT reserves the right to limit participation in DSECT based on space availability or suitability for the program.
